Although the Cyber Celebration is Thursday and Friday, today is the official anniversary date of The Daily Raw Blog. It was three years ago today that I first placed fingertips to keyboard to lay document in the blogosphere.
Please enjoy this blast-from-the past as I revisit May 25, 2007.
Happy Anniversary Daily Raw Blog!
It started with a Feast.
“I’m going on a 92-day juice feast.”
Silence across the phone line, my sister has abandoned me.
“I’m starting a 92-day juice feast.”
“I heard you, why are you fasting?"
I explained to her that I’m not fasting but I’m going to feast daily on 1,200-1,500 calories of fresh fruit and vegetable juices.
“Why?”
I told her about the video I saw of Angela Stokes. She is a raw foodist from the UK who embarked on the feast created by David Rain. The video focused on Angela’s first solid food after completing her 92 days.
My sister listened quietly as I went on and on about how Angela’s skin glowed and her crystal-clear blue eyes reflected the clarity she spoke of acquiring during this fascinating journey.
In that 8 minute and 36 second video, she simplified the world for me. She gave me hope that life could be as simple as she stated and dare I say that I could acquire the peace that my sister and I beg for on a daily basis.
Forget that we have seven children between us, we still wanted peace.
“You want blue eyes that reflect?”
“By juicing you remove the fiber from foods, thus your body can absorb and assimilate the nutrients quicker.”
“What?”
I spent the next few minutes explaining that my body, particularly my digestive system, was going on a three-month vacation. With nothing to digest but liquids, my body could concentrate on cleaning matter out of my colon and small intestine. Decades of eating cooked foods will hopefully come out and I’ll be able to start fresh with a clean body.
As Angela puts it in her e-book, “The aims of Juice Feasting are to: Cleanse, Rebuild, Rehydrate and Alkalise.”
“And why are you doing this?”
“To lose weight, duh.”
Let me start off saying “thank you” to all who wrote beautiful words of support by email and in the comments section. I really appreciate it. I don’t have time right now to answer everyone back individually (especially in the comments box) but please know that you are in my thoughts.
On to Fort Bragg
Surrounded by the of Northern California's redwood forests (home to those winding roads) and the Pacific Ocean, Fort Bragg is a small town located in coastal Mendocino County.
According to Fort Bragg’s website, the area was home to the Native American Indians, most of whom belonged to the Pomo tribe. They were hunter-gatherers who lived close to the land and sea.
In 1855 an exploration party from the Bureau of Indian Affairs visited the area looking for a site on which to establish a reservation and, in the spring of 1856, the Mendocino Indian Reservation was established at Noyo. It was 25,000 acres and extended from what is now Simpson Lane to Abalobadiah Creek and east to Bald Hill.
In the summer of 1857, First Lieutenant Horatio G. Gibson established a military post on the Mendocino Indian Reservation approximately one and one-half miles north of the Noyo River. He named the camp for his former commanding officer Captain Braxton Bragg, who later became a General in the Army of the Confederacy. The official date of the establishment of the fort was June 11, 1857. Its purpose was to maintain order on the reservation.
Now, from my observation, it seems to be a mix of working-class town folks in jeans and strip shirts and free-spirit hippies in long-flowing garb and dreads. To tell you the truth, I haven’t really found out what this town is all about. It is still a mystery.
I plan to explore when I get a moment to breathe.
On my walks to and from school, I have noticed he sky has been grey and misty on most days (nothing too gloomy, it’s almost romantic). When the sun finally makes it to Fort Bragg, it beams through the clouds and it’s a phenomenal sight. The air is full of warmth either way in spite of the sky’s hues. A few nights and early mornings have been a bit nippy but nothing to unbearable.
I have a slight confession to make. I am falling in love… with Fort Bragg. It started out as a school-girl crush. I adore the mild weather (can you imagine the garden I could create YEAR-ROUND), the friendly people, the easy navigation of the streets, the beach and I, especially, LOVE the fact that the premier raw foods school is here. All infatuation-worthy reasons. Now my crush has developed as full-blown love. But I have a tendency of falling head over heals fast and then falling flat on my face. So the next step is to find out what lies deeper in Fort Bragg, jobs, a place to live, schools for the children, etc. I am afraid that this love affair with Fort Bragg will have to proceed slow and steady before I make any rash decisions about my family’s future.

Carrot CakeThe first class you have to take at Living Light is the FUNdamentals of Raw Living Foods. It is an entry-level class where you learn the basics of sprouting, making kraut, nut milks and how to use equipment of a raw food kitchen and so much more. This class is a prerequisite for Essentials of Raw Culinary Arts, Raw Culinary Arts Associate Chef and Instructor Training and the Gourmet Chef series.
Herb CheeseIt was a laid back sort of day full of demos and lots of tasty foods to try. There was no hands-on training so we didn’t don our chef wear.
Almond Milk, Granola, Brownie
We met all of our instructors, including Founder and director Cherie Soria. I couldn't believe it! "The Mother of Gourmet Raw Vegan Cuisine" actually teaches quite a few of the classes, more than I had anticipated. That was a nice surprise.
LunchThe Snail: I have never seen a snail inside its shell so I took several (hundred) of photos, I was fascinated by them.

“Doesn’t that clean you out?”
My sister’s right, my husband and I had been raw on and off for the past three years and I had been pretty consistently, mostly 100 percent raw for the past few months.
Recently, a slight bit of hypocrisy filled my heart and I secretly wondered to myself this…
For as long as I had been practicing being a raw foodist…for as many times as I sang the praises of eating raw to my friends and family…and the brief moments I felt a bit superior to those who were slowing killing themselves by eating cooked food while I was living to be 120 because of uncooked foods…it dawned on me, I am still overweight.
No wonder the people who watched me gloat on my pulpit couldn’t take me serious. I didn’t look like what a raw foodist should look. I was a fraud.
Don’t misunderstand. I’m all for eating raw; it’s the best thing for my body. I have energy, I’m happier; more patient with the kids (all ten of them, oops sorry four) and the list goes on. I love being raw, I love talking about raw foods, I love preparing raw meals, I love meeting other raw foodists. I love raw.
But my body was proof that I hadn’t followed the raw lifestyle on a consistent basis.
Granted, I had been pregnant for the past two years and my hormonal cravings for Chipotle burritos always seemed to win out in the race to stay raw but there was always room for improvement.
And that starts now, well tomorrow. Tomorrow I begin the my 92-day juice feast adventure.
I don’t anticipate it being easy, especially when my seven-year old comes to me with a mouth full of Cheetos and brags that she can fit five in at once. "Great for you honey, now try that with some carrots."
But knowing myself, if it were easy, I wouldn’t want any part of it.
If I may step back on my high horse for a moment and say that I have seen the radiate glow and it’s raw food and for me it will begin (again) with the feast.
“Well, I’m going to end up hating you.”
Stunned, I asked my sister why.
“Because, you’re going to be skinny.”
God I hope so.
Here are a few items I need to begin my feast:
• Angela’s e-book. . .check
• Fresh, organic produce. . .check
• Juicer (brought out from of storage). . .check
• Blender and nut bags. . .check
• Hemp, flax and coconut oil. . .check
• MSM, Cascara Sagrada, digestive enzymes, yada, yada, ya...check
• Sympathetic husband. . .check
• Hot springs date with sympathetic husband. . .sexy
• Tongue scraper. . .kind of kinky
• Artsana enema bag. . .don’t ask
My last (solid) supper
